ABOUT

This Year we celebrate our 40th birthday

The Shoalhaven Lydian Singers choir was formed in 1976 by the late Don Dudgeon, to perform choral works, both sacred and secular. The initial choir of twelve voices soon established a reputation for excellence which has been our continuing aim.

Since those early days our membership has grown to over 60 voices. This has enabled us to perform large choral works, such as Mozart’s Mass in C, Handel’s Messiah, Mendelssohn’s magnificent oratorio Elijah, and Masses by Haydn and Schubert. Other concerts have included A Night On Broadway, Gilbert & Sullivan, A Night At the Opera and Berry Street Jazz.

More recently we have performed 3 works by Karl Jenkins: The Armed Man, Stabat Mater & Stella Natalis. Other recent performances have included Goodall’s Eternal Light, Mozart’s Requiem, Morten Lauridsen’s Lux Aeterna, Rossini’s Stabat Mater, Faure’s Requiem, and many wonderful traditional & modern songs.

New members are always welcome, so if you enjoy singing and would like to join our choir, please contact us. We rehearse every Wednesday from 6.30 to 9pm, at the St Andrews Presbyterian Church Hall, Nowra. (Off the bottom end of Woolworths carpark)

Our Musical Director Lesley Challender.

Lesley studied singing, oboe and piano at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music. She has been Director of Music for large community choirs, church and school choirs, combined Choral Festivals and also specialist choral groups and a cappella consorts. She has played major roles in theatre and musicals and also enjoys directing Musical Theatre and other dramatic art forms. She has conducted choirs both in Europe and in Australia. At present she is enjoying working with the Shoalhaven Lydian Singers and with the a cappella group Southland.

new members

The Shoalhaven Lydian Singers are always happy to welcome new members.

We don’t have a formal audition and ask only that prospective members have a pleasing singing voice.

An ability to read music is helpful but not essential. We suggest that interested prospective members come along and sing with us for a few rehearsals so that we can see how we fit with each other’s needs.

Our rehearsals are 6.30pm to 9.00pm every Wednesday at St Andrews Church Hall, Nowra.

The choir is warm, friendly and supportive with a repertoire which covers both sacred and secular choral works such as madrigals, masses, show tunes and modern jazz (both ‘a Capella’ and with accompaniment).
